Boulder Valley Lacrosse

Boys Lacrosse FAQs

What is Boulder Valley Lacrosse?
  • Boulder Valley Lacrosse is a nonprofit, volunteer based organization dedicated to spreading the great sport of lacrosse throughout Northern Colorado.
  • We organize boys and girls competitive teams for the spring lacrosse season, as well as camps and clinics in the fall, summer, and winter.
  • We partner with the YMCA of Boulder Valley, which offers recreational lacrosse for boys players who do not wish to travel to games.  The YMCA also conducts introductory clinics, which are open not only to boys and girls in grades 1-8, but parents as well.

Who coaches for BVL?

  • We have a mix of parents and young men who volunteer their time.  Almost all of our coaches have high school and college lacrosse playing experience.  In 2010, we will have boys coaches who played at top college programs including Cornell, Vermont, Hobart, Dartmouth, Oklahoma State, Colorado, and DU.
  • We strongly encourage all of our coaches to participate in our coach certification program, which follows the recommendations of the Positive Coaching Alliance and US Lacrosse.
  • BVL Executive Director Andrew Davies grew up playing in the lacrosse hotbed of Rochester, New York.  He is a graduate of Amherst College and the University of Colorado.  Before joining BVL, he served as the varsity head coach at Green Mountain High School in Lakewood. He is a US Lacrosse certified Level I Coach.

My son has no experience in lacrosse.  Can he play for Boulder Valley Lacrosse?

  • All boys in grades 2-8 are welcome to play for Boulder Valley.  We have experienced coaches who do a fantastic job teaching inexperienced players about the skills, rules, and uniquely sportsmanlike culture of lacrosse.
  • Boys who have never played before are also welcome to play lacrosse in the "recreational" environment at the YMCA of Boulder Valley.  YMCA Lacrosse teams do not travel, they play and practice exclusively at the Arapahoe YMCA in Lafayette.  Click here for more information on recreational lacrosse:  YMCA Lacrosse .
My daughter wants to play lacrosse.  Where can she play?
  • All girls in Boulder County are encouraged to play for the Warrior Girls Youth Lacrosse Program, which is affiliated with Boulder Valley Lacrosse.
  • For information on girls lacrosse, visit www.bouldergirlslacrosse.org .
What is the 2010 schedule for BVL boys?
  • Boys will begin practice the week of March 1.  There will be no practice the week of spring break (March 20 to March 30).
  • Boys games will be held every Saturday from April 4 through May 22.
  • All boys teams will also participate in the season-ending Rocky Mountain Lacrosse Jamboree, from Friday June 4 through Sunday June 6.
  • Boys teams will play a minimum of eight games in the Colorado Youth Lacrosse Association.
  • There will not be games played over Memorial Day weekend, but teams may choose to participate in the Mountain Lax Jam held in Evergreen.
  • We will announce times and dates for BVL Preseason Lacrosse Clinics soon.
When and where are BVL boys practices and games held?
  • Boys will practice twice a week at Dawson School (off Hwy 287) in Lafayette or at Manhattan Middle School in Boulder, generally from 5:30 to 7pm or from 6 to 7:30pm.
  • All home games will be held at Dawson School in Lafayette.
  • Boys teams will travel for away games to locations around Northern Colorado such as Denver, Littleton, Fort Collins, Loveland, and Broomfield.
What is the boys registration fee for 2010?
  • BOYS registration fee has been LOWERED this year to $225 (plus $25 for US Lacrosse membership if necessary).  This includes team fee for participation in the Rocky Mountain Jamboree.
  • Boys uniforms are NOT included in the registration.  Boys can purchase new uniform tops ($25) and/or shorts ($20) separately if requested on the online registration form.  Players NEW to BVL must purchase a complete uniform-- jersey and shorts.
  • Every player in BVL this season will receive a FREE Icon Lacrosse instructional DVD as part of his registration.
Why are players required to have US Lacrosse membership?
  • Membership in US Lacrosse provides us with substantially lower insurance costs and provides our players with supplemental insurance.
  • Most off-season lacrosse camps and clinics by other providers require US Lacrosse membership as well, so you will save money in the future.
  • Signup for US Lacrosse is simple--  it is part of the basic registration process.
How are boys teams formed?
  • Boys teams for grades 2-5 will be formed primarily on the basis of grade, geography and previous experience.   We will attempt to keep friends together on the same team at these grade levels, particularly boys who have played together before.   Inexperienced players may be placed on a team with more experienced players in certain circumstances, particularly if they attend the same neighborhood school.
  • Boys teams for grades 6-8 will be formed on the basis of grade, geography, previous experience, and athletic ability.  A greater emphasis will be placed on competition at these grade levels.  Again, inexperienced players may be placed on a team with more experienced players in certain circumstances, as we seek to group future high school teammates together.
  • IMPORTANT:  We cannot guarantee that any player will be placed on the same team from year to year.
  • Registering early may improve your chances of being assigned to a specific BVL team.
How do we know what team our son is on, and when his practices are?
  • Team rosters and practice schedules will be posted on the website no later than TUESDAY FEBRUARY 23 (practices will begin the following week on Monday March 1).
  • Coaches will also email their teams as soon as possible after receiving their rosters.
  • You can view these rosters by clicking on the "Team Pages" tab at the top of the website, and then clicking on "Rosters" on its dropdown menu.  Rosters can only be viewed by BVL members, so you will need to log in at the bottom of the page.
  • Multiple teams exist at each grade level, so you may need to look at a few rosters before you find your son's placement.
What equipment do players need?
  • Boys must have a lacrosse stick, helmet, gloves, shoulder and elbow pads, a cup, and a mouthguard.  Hockey gear is acceptable for use.
  • You can purchase equipment from our great sponsor Breakaway Sports, located at 30th and Valmont in Boulder, or from our online store sponsor Harrow Lacrosse.
  • Check with Play It Again Sports in Longmont or Boulder to purchase used equipment.
Should I purchase any specific brand of stick or equipment?
  • Boulder Valley Lacrosse does not endorse any specific brand of stick or equipment, but we do recommend that you purchase a white helmet and black gloves.
What is Boulder Valley Select or BVL Select?
  • BVL Select teams are highly competitive tryout teams which compete in the top ("red") divisions of the CYLA (Colorado Youth Lacrosse Association).  We sponsor one team in each of the 6th, 7th, and 8th grades.  Teams are determined by tryouts held each year in February.
  • For more information on BVL Select teams, click here:  BVL Select Info.
I have a question about boys lacrosse rules, such as how long are sticks allowed to be?
I still have a question-- whom should I contact?
  • For questions about the BVL or YMCA boys programs, please email Andrew Davies at
  • For questions about the Warrior girls program, please email Elizabeth Erhardt at .
