Boys Lacrosse FAQs: SPRING 2022

What is Boulder Valley Lacrosse?

  • Boulder Valley Lacrosse is a community based, nonprofit 501c3 organization dedicated to spreading the great sport of lacrosse throughout Northern Colorado.

  • We organize boys competitive travel teams for our primary lacrosse season, spring, as well as travel teams, camps and clinics in the fall, winter, and summer.

Who coaches for BVL?

  • We have a mix of parents and young men who volunteer their time.  Almost all of our coaches have high school or college lacrosse playing experience.  In 2022, we will have boys coaches who played at top college programs including Colgate,   Bucknell, Hobart, Hofstra, Penn State, and Colorado. We strongly encourage all of our coaches to participate in our coach certification program, which follows the recommendations of the Positive Coaching Alliance and US Lacrosse.

  • All BVL coaches pass a background check administered by NCSI and agree to our BVL Coaches Pledge of Responsibility.

  • BVL Executive Director Andrew Davies grew up playing in the lacrosse hotbed of Rochester, New York.  He is a graduate of Amherst College and holds a master's degree from the University of Colorado.  Before joining BVL, he served as the varsity head coach at Green Mountain High School in Lakewood and has coached for Denver Elite and Icon Lacrosse.  Andrew is one of several US Lacrosse certified Level II coaches in Colorado.  He serves on the Colorado Youth Lacrosse Association's Executive Committee and is a past member of the US Lacrosse National Men's Game Rules Subcommittee. In 2019, he worked as the Lacrosse Operations Manager for the Premier Lacrosse League, in its inaugural season.

My son has no experience in lacrosse.  Can he play for Boulder Valley Lacrosse?

  • All boys in grades 1- 8 are welcome to play for Boulder Valley. Our experienced coaches do a fantastic job teaching inexperienced players about the skills, rules, and uniquely sportsmanlike culture of lacrosse.

My daughter wants to play lacrosse.  Where can she play?

  • All girls are encouraged to play for the Boulder Valley Girls Lacrosse (BVGL) Program. For information on girls lacrosse, visit

What is the boys registration fee for 2022?

  • BOYS registration fee will be $375 for players registered in the month of January.  Registration fee will increase to $395 effective February 1st.

  • All players will receive a new uniform for spring 2022 as part of the registration fee.

  • All registrants must have US Lacrosse membership valid through May 31st. ($30 cost if renewal is necessary).  Registration fee covers our field rental expenses, lacrosse equipment including goals and balls, league fees, CYLA Championship entry fee, officials charges, coaching and educational expenditures, and administrative costs.

  • Our uniforms are custom-made in the USA by Stylax Sportswear- right here in Denver, Colorado.

  • Scholarships for deserving families are available to defray the cost of registration.  Please email to make a confidential scholarship request.

Why are players required to have US Lacrosse membership?

  • Membership in US Lacrosse provides us with substantially lower insurance costs and provides our players with supplemental insurance.   US Lacrosse provides our sport with important safety research, rules guidelines, and coaching development programs.

  • Most off-season lacrosse tournaments, camps and clinics by other providers require US Lacrosse membership as well, so you will save money in the future.

  • Our registration system is integrated with US Lacrosse membership.   If you need to purchase or renew US Lacrosse membership, you will be redirected to to sign up your son and then returned to our website to complete the registration process.  If you have issues with the US Lacrosse membership process, email .  Any issue with membership will not prevent your son from playing with us.

How are boys teams formed?

  • Boys teams are formed on the basis of GRADE and experience.

  • We strongly recommend that all parents read our placement philosophy: NOTE ON BVL TEAM FORMATION

  • Teams for 1st, 2nd, and 3rd graders will be formed primarily on the basis of age, geography and previous experience.

  • Boys' teams for 4th through 8th graders will be formed on the basis of coach selection and previous experience. Coaches in these age brackets will provide input regarding team rosters and formation.  A greater emphasis on competitive ability will be instituted at these levels.   Beginning players and players new to BVL will be placed on teams appropriate to their past experience level.

  • Our overarching goal is to place every player at the level best suited to his experience and athletic ability.  We believe that our players' personal enjoyment and growth is maximized when they are grouped with players of similar ability levels.

  • IMPORTANT: We will not guarantee that any player will be placed on the same team from year to year.

How do we know what team our son is on, and when his practices are?

  • Team rosters, practice schedules, and locations will be emailed to parents and posted on the website no later than Wednesday March 2nd, 2022. Practices will begin the week of Monday March 14th, after Daylight Savings begins.  Coaches will also email their teams as soon as possible after receiving their rosters.

  • You can view these rosters by clicking on the "Team Pages" tab at the top of the website, and then clicking on "Rosters" on its dropdown menu.  Rosters can only be viewed by BVL members, so you will need to log in at the top of the page.

What equipment do players need?

  • All players must have a boys lacrosse stick, helmet, gloves, shoulder and elbow pads, a cup, and a mouthguard.

  • Hockey gear is acceptable for new players.  Hockey helmets must have a 4 point strap and be NOCSAE approved.  We do not recommend the use of hockey gloves in lieu of lacrosse gloves, due to their increased stiffness and lack of dexterity.

  • Our sponsor Dick’s Sporting Goods is a great source of lacrosse equipment.

  • SAVE THE DATES of Friday February 25th through Monday February 28th, 2022! Our great sponsor Dick's Sporting Goods will again host BVL Shop Days at Flatirons Crossing on those dates- BVL members can save 20% off in-store purchases on this weekend.  Click here for printable coupon: BVL Shop Days With Dick's Sporting Goods

Should I purchase any specific brand of stick or equipment?

  • Boulder Valley Lacrosse does not endorse any specific brand of stick or equipment.  We generally encourage, but do not require, parents to purchase white helmets and green or black gloves so that players will have an “uniform” appearance on the field for us.

I have a question about boys lacrosse rules, such as how long are sticks allowed to be?
